The Star Plans New Six-Star Hotel
The Star Entertainment Group has announced that renovations to The Star casino in Sydney will now include a six-star hotel addition to maintain a high level of competition with James Packer’s Crown Sydney Resort that will be built in Barangaroo across the harbour.
In addition to the $500 million upgrade taking place at The Star, which includes renovations of the Astral Tower and Residences, refurbishment of the arrivals area, work on interior areas and a new restaurant, the new addition will include a 220-room hotel and 150 residences.
The hotel will be operated as a Ritz-Carlton with three architects currently vying for the project. The architect is expected to be announced next week and once approvals have been granted on the design, the building will begin. It is expected that the new hotel could open as early as 2020.
Matt Bekier, managing director of The Star Entertainment Group said that this development, with its hotel and entertainment, will be important for Sydney.
“Our development concept will take The Star’s room inventory to more than 1,000, bring the Ritz-Carlton brand back to Sydney and add a further 20 food and beverage venues,” added Mr Bekier.
This sentiment is shared by the executive director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe, who said that the planned hotel would add to the energy and life of the Western Harbour Precinct.
“This will be outstanding for Sydney and will be a much-needed six-star hotel for the city,” commented Forsythe.
“ We are a service city and tourists make a choice on quality and The Star is meeting this market with the proposed development.”
These plans come as The Star Entertainment Group is moving forward with development on its other properties, including a $345 million upgrade to its Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast.
