Racing NSW and Australian Turf Club Prepare for First Major NSW Race
NSW is getting ready to host the world’s richest horse race on turf this year. To be named The Everest, the new race will be run over 1200m in October and will be worth A$10 million.
The new race is a joint venture between Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club, and it will surpass Australia’s most famous race, The Melbourne Cup, which is currently worth A$6 million. The race is getting bookmakers excited and Sportsbet has already opened a market on The Everest.
The Everest will take place at Randwick and with its 1200m track it will attract some of the best sprinters in the world. There will be twelve slots and these will be sold by expression of interest, providing the owner of the slot with one entry into the field. The $10 million purse is expected to be mostly funded by owners through the $600,000 entry fee to nominate their horse.
“The Everest is a joint venture between Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club, who share a vision to see more Sydney racing on the world stage,” said Laurie Macri, chairman of the Australian Turf Club.
The Melbourne Cup, which will be held only three weeks after The Everest is likely to be overshadowed by this new race and is expected to send shockwaves through the Victorian racing industry.
“This represents an innovative concept and a tremendous new event to promote thoroughbred racing to a broader audience,” stated Peter V’Landys, chief executive of Racing NSW. “Being a sprint over Royal Randwick’s testing 1200m circuit, The Everest is tailored to Australian racing.”
Winx, who won over 1200m as a two year old, but has only run that distance once since then when she came in seventh, is the favourite at Sportsbet at $4.
