Bendigo RSL Plans Expansion of Gaming Facility
Bendigo RSL in Victoria has applied for twelve new poker machines as part of a $1.25 million overhaul it is planning for its facilities to upgrade its facade and facilities and expand its gaming room.
The Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch is applying for the new pokies as a way to help fund the upgrades, saying that the revenue it collects, which it expects to be up to $130,000 in the first year, will allow them to increase their support of veterans through an upgrade of the Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Institute.
In addition to supporting veterans, the revenue from the pokies would help to bankroll a new RSL welfare officer and finance better monitoring of the gaming area. The RSL proposal included a social and economic impact statement which looked into the impact that new gaming machines would have on the local community and found no negative results.
If the proposal is approved, Bendigo RSL will have a total of 93 poker machines.
Nick Anderson, managing director of the NBA Group, which has made the application on behalf of the Bendigo RSL, said that the upgrade is about more than just getting some additional pokies on site.
“It’s a significant internal overhaul and would create additional office space to enable the RSL to increase its welfare office and employ additional welfare staff to assist members and veterans,” he explained.
“It would also include a large new kids’ play area and other enhancements.”
The application for the upgrade to the City of Greater Bendigo, which would allow the facility to accommodate the new gaming machines, was lodged earlier this month and on Friday a hearing was held with the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation.
