Aristocrat Leisure Profits Surge Thanks to Pokies Success
Australian gaming machine manufacturer, Aristocrat Leisure, has experienced a significant boost in profits thanks to its strong Australian operations, successful pokies and strong digital social gaming performance. In fact, its half year profits more than doubled from the same time last year.
Aristocrat reported net profits of $159 million for the six months ending March 31, more than double the $78 million it reported from the same time last year. According to company chief executive, Jamie Odell, Aristocrat had not expected such strong growth in Australia. Their Australian and New Zealand operations, in constant currency terms, increased 96 percent to $90.6 million.
The digital business division of Aristocrat also enjoyed significant growth with an increase of more than double in constant currency terms to $46 million from $17 million the previous year. This has been attributed to the success of their Heart of Vegas casino games on Facebook and the continued growth of its app following its launch for Android.
“The take-up of Android was far faster than we had expected,” stated Mr Odell. This also contributed to the fact that the number of users grew by 63 percent to 1.25 million.
Aristocrat’s American business accounts for 60 percent of its total profits and its revenue almost doubled to $1.01 billion due to a 26 percent increase in this business area.
In addition, their Lightning Link and Britney Spears pokie games have proved successful in Australian pubs, clubs and casinos where they are choosing Aristocrat’s Helix pokies over machines from their competitors.
“We’ve grown significantly more than the market and we have taken competitors’ older products out,” commented Mr Odell. However, in the same breath he cautioned that the same growth was unlikely to be replicated in the second half of the year.
